Historic Polegreen Church

Historic Polegreen Church is located in Hanover County, Virginia.  Polegreen Church is a site connected to Reverend Samuel Davies who pastored at this church from 1748 to 1755.  Davies, a great orator, was influential in the life of Patrick Henry and was one of Henry’s biggest inspirations and role models.  Davies was the first non-Anglican minister to receive a license to minister in Virginia.  He also promoted literacy for the enslaved at a time when enslaved people were not allowed to be educated or taught how to read.  Owned and run by the Historic Polegreen Church Foundation, the site has several historic markers and the outlines of where the original church was located as well as the reading room.  Visit their website at, Historic Polegreen Church Foundation – Virginia’s Birthplace of Religious Freedom and keep up to date on the happenings there.
